Look at YA, for example. That's a genre by itself and then within that you've scifi/fantasy, chick lit, mystery, etc.

Also, I dislike the idea of ALWAYS sticking with one genre. I have many different ideas, some that are fantasy, others that are mystery. Why should I not write all of them?

Re: The Next Big Thing Blog Hop

This sounds amazing! It's fairly cheap. No sales tax. Within driving distance of four major cities, ocean, countryside. Quite liberal. Decent LBGT presence, at least out of Philly. Good food scene. Whole Foods. It's going to be diverse, and that's simply the way it is and nobody questions that. I'm leaving the cultural conflict not tied to skin colour at all.

Somebody wrote an interesting blog post, but I can't find it any more, about how Katniss Everdeen had to be a person of colour because of the struggles of her people and how if she's white then she's appropriating the struggles of millions of POC's. And my initial reaction to that was 'what about the millions of white people attacked and killed and enslaved by other white people? Black people aren't the only ones who've been on the receiving end' and it's mainly that thought that makes me want to keep my world's struggles colour-blind. There are so many more interesting cultural distinctions to play with.

Re: ‘Medieval’; Fantasy; Rethought

I actually really like David Weber for that. The queen of the eventual Star Empire of Manticore in the Honorverse books is a dark-skinned black woman the central character of most of the books is a light olive-skinned woman of some Asian, some Latin, and some northern European descent. Mankind in general literally boggles at the concept that people were once judged on the basis of the amount of melanin in their skin.

Re: Zombie Candy by Frederick Lee Brooke

James, thanks so much for joining the tour and posting this excerpt of Zombie Candy!

Re: Novels

Thanks for commenting! They have also asked the creator/Hyperion and they won't reveal it. When you do have a chance the first ten chapters are online at the ABC website. Here is the link: http://abc.go.com/shows/cas...

Re: What is this sorcery?

Obviously I can't judge the content of the books, which is why I was hoping to hear from people like you who have read them. Otherwise I wouldn't bother to talk about it or ask at all. Which is why I asked how good they would be and did not state that they were bad - if I had such powers of precognition I'd be rich.

So thank you for coming out in their defence. I may give them a chance if I get through my 'to read' list enough to add more to it. Is there really talk out there about who writes the books or do most people not care? I guess that's what I'm curious about.

Re: What is this sorcery?

Yes you're over thinking it. Since when do people think books write themselves? People are a lot smarter than anyone gives them credit for being, please do the same. There are three books in the series and another coming out in September and they're written as tie-in novels to the actual show. The fan base is strong and two of the books have debuted in the NY Times Best Seller list. It's speculated that either the creator of the show (Andrew Marlowe) or any of the already famous authors (James Patterson, Stephen J. Cannell, Michael Connelly, and Dennis Lehane) writes the novels. Obviously Cannell is out since he is deceased.

As a writer you should know never to judge a book by its cover...read it first and THEN state your opinion. By no means are these novels herald as masterpieces but (in my opinion) they're pretty good.

Re: New Book: The Day of First Sun, by Sheryl Steines

I love your description of the strong female character...perspective really matters.

Re: New Book: The Day of First Sun, by Sheryl Steines

Hey, thanks for dropping by! I love what you wrote about writing women characters. It reminded me of a speech by Joss Whedon, the gist of it being "How is it possible that this is even a question?" It almost seems crazy that in this day and age we still have to think about these things, but we must, in order to fix it. Thanks for being part of the solution and not the problem.

Re: New Book: The Day of First Sun, by Sheryl Steines

I just wanted to thank you for hosting The Day of First Sun on your blog. It’s amazing to have people interested in the story and the characters. I had a great time writing about Annie and Cham. I hope that other’s get the same enjoyment out of them that I have. I’ve decided bloggers totally rock! Thanks.

Re: Worldbuilding: Doing It Wrong

I actually spent a lot of time awake in bed still thinking of how to make it work.
